According to one of the most famous stories of the birth of Bengaluru city's name, an aged woman living in the forest presented boiled beans and water to the 13th-century monarch from the Hoysala dynasty, Veera Ballala II, satisfying his hunger after he lost during a hunting voyage. To express his appreciation, he named the woods "Benda Kaalu Ooru" or "Bendakaalooru," which decodes The City of Boiled Beans, which later became Bengaluru as a town substituted the forest and then a metropolis. Chidananda Murthy offered one of the prominent historical views behind the name. According to the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) officials, Bengaluru's name might have emanated from the white quartz stones discovered in the Balepet, Nagarthpet, and Chikpet sites of the city, resulting in it being named 'Biliya Kallina Ooru,' or a city of white quartz stones. Over the centuries, it became Bengaluru, according to Murthy's theory. Another theory contends that the city's name is derived from 'Bengawaluru,' which means the location of the bodyguards. However, this approach has a different historical corroboration than the last one. Its supporters argue that the army of the Hoysala empire, particularly 'Bengawalu Pade' or the ruler's bodyguards, had their soldiers in the city, giving it the title Bengawalu and Ooru-- a commonly used in names of villages, townlets, and cities-- was counted to it over the years.
SK Aruni, ICHR south regional center director and a leading metropolis scholar, has a different theory. He tells out that Venkatanatha, or Venkateshwara of Tirupati, was an influential deity in south India, particularly in Bengaluru. "If you see at old houses in Banglore, various homes were called after Venkatesha. He was a local god, and Venakanaooru may have become Bengaluru over time. This is my view," said Aruni. Rajesh HG, a scholar and Itihasa Darapana editor, said there was another view that Bengaluru's name derived from the Benga tree, called Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb, which was once glimpsed widely in the city. He said it was claimed that the city was named Benganooru (land of Benga), which later evolved into Bengaluru.
While any historical proof does not go with the above theories, there is one theory that all professionals believe has the most substantial claim since a historical scripture supports it. In Begur, situated around 15 km from the Bengaluru metropolis, inside a temple, researchers found some inscriptions, particularly a 'Veera Kallu' or a Heroic Stone-- a slab displaying heroic acts of individuals. This stone, dating to 890 AD, describes a battle scene called 'Bengaluru Yuddha' or the Battle of Bengaluru. The stone reveals the story of Nagattara, who swore his loyalty to Ereyappa Arasu, the Ganga majesty at the time. As per the inscription, in the War of Bengaluru in 890 AD, Nagattara's son Buttanapati and adopted son Pervonasetti passed away. The Begur hero stone has carvings of war scenes and techniques crafted by Ereyappa Arasu. It says that Nagattara also passed away in the battle of Tumbepadi, combated between the dynasties of Gangas and Rashtrakutas. It also mentions ten areas in Bengaluru, which were villages then donated to other chieftains after Nagattara's death.
Suresh Moona, a prominent historian, said this was a research-backed view of the city's title. "The metropolis called Bengaluru existed since 800 AD, but it was not the place we know today. It is argued that the mother of Kempe Gowda, the originator of Bengaluru city, belonged to old Bengaluru. When Gowda decided to construct a new city, he anointed it after his mother's home, Bengaluru," stated Moona. He said the historical inscriptions made the thesis closer to the truth. "Will we ever know where the title of Bangalore comes from? I don't know. But these views backed by a history study should be encouraged more and made into contemporary folklore instead of the one regarding boiled beans," Moona added.
